“Your silence will not protect you.”
Audre Lorde
For the performance and film program “Echoes,” 16 international artists have been invited to Moabit to present their works and artistic practices. Echoes are how animals use sounds and their reverberations to orient themselves spatially—be it bats or mammals, such as the toothed whale. Humans also possess this ability to establish orientation through sound; in a more figurative sense, however, echoes become a metaphor for how things resonate in person-to-person communication. We use our voices
and bodies to make sounds and noise, to tell stories, to speak up for others, to listen or be heard.
Among other things, with the screening of the documentary film Audre Lorde – Die Berliner Jahre 1984–92 by
Dagmar Schultz, “Echoes” offers insight into the former West Berlin of the 1980s and early 1990s; it alternates
between Mark Reeder’s (MFS) DJ-Set and Niclas Riepshoff’s barrel organ performance. “Echoes” also invites viewers on a historical and critical city tour with Oumar Diallo, who founded Afrika Haus in Moabit in 1993, while Jana Shostak whispers present-day voices to us, telling stories from her experiences this past year as an activist on the Ukrainian-Polish border.
The artists’ program opens up a resonance chamber that echoes in emotional, socio-political, and nostalgic ways.
